THE BATCHEWANA BAUD OF INDIANS DOG BY-LAWS 008879 Being a by-law to provide for the regulation of the Control and Destruction of Dogs on the Rankin Indian Reserve. The Council of the Batchewana Band of Indians enacts as a by-law the following:. 1. These regulations maybe cited as the Indian Reserve Dog Regulations. 2. In these regulationsยป (a) "Director" means the Director of Indian Affairs, Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. ' (b) "Dog" means any dog male or femalef (c) "Dog Registration Officer" means the person designated as such by the Director; and (d) "Minister" means the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. 3. The head of each family and each person living alone desiring to keep a dog shall apply to the Dog Registration Officer for permission to do so and shall obtain a permit for such dog; such permit shall be for one year and the issue and the renewal thereof shall be at the discretion of the Dog Registration Officer. 4. All owners registering their degs shall be required to produce proof of having the animal vaccinated against rabies within a period of no greater than two years prior to the registration. 5. With the consent of the Council of the Band the head of each family and each person living alone may keep more than one dog provided that registration of such dog is made in accordance with these regulations. 6. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 3 and 4 an Indian may keep with the consent of the Council of the Band, not more than five work dogs; all work dogs shall be chained or confined in a suitable enclosure when not in use. 7. (1) The Dog Registration Officer shall keep a book for all dog registration upon the Reserve which registration shall show the name, sex, and description.

(2) Upon registration the Dog Kegistration Officer shall issue a registration tag free of charge to the owner, which shall be attached to the dog at all times; any changes of ownership of any registered dog shall be entered into the register. 8. Any dog found by the Council of the Band to be a nuisance shall be reported to the dog Registration Officer who may enter upon the premises where the dog may be and destroy such dog. 9. No unregistered. dog may be harboured or kept^by any person and any dog not registered may be seized and destroyed by the Bog Registration Officer. 10. Any person harbouring or keeping a dog that is not registered shall be liable on summary conviction to a penalty not exceeding ten dollars or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten days, or both fine and imprisonment. 11. These regulations shall com^ in to effect on the fifteenth day of May 1974, and shall only apply,to such Indian Reserves or parts thereof as maybe specified in writing by the Minister.
