THE ST. REGIS AKWESASNE BAND OF INDIANS BY-LAW No. 18-79. Being a by-law respecting regulations for the control and destruction of dogs. WHEREAS, paragraph (a) and (r) of Section 81 of the Indian Act empowers the Council of a Band to make by-laws to provide for the health of residents on the Reserve and to prevent the spreading of diseases and the imposition of a penalty for a violation thereof, WHEREAS, it is deemed to be expedient to provide for the regulation for the control and destruction of dogs for the health, safety and welfare of the inhabitants of the St. Regis Akwesasne Indian Reserve. NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Iroquois of St. Regis Band enacts as a by-law thereof, the following: 1 . In this by-law: (a) "Reserve" means a tract of land that has been set apart for the use and benefit of the St. Regis Akwesasne Band of Indians. (b) "Council" means the Council of the Iroquois of St. Regis Band of Indians. (c) "Band" means the St. Regis Akwesasne Band of Indians. (d) "Dog" means any dog male or female. (e) "Dog Registration Officer" means the person designated as such by the Council. 2. The head of each family and each person living alone desiring to keep a dog shall apply to the Dog Registration Officer for permission to do so and shall obtain a permit for such dog upon payment of an amount of which shall be established by the Council of the Band; such permit shall be for the life of the dog. 3. With the consent of the Council of the Band the head of each family and each person living alone may keep one dog and it shall be chained provided that registration of such dog is made in accordance with these regulations. 4. (1) The Dog Registration Officer shall keep a book for the registration of all dogs upon the reserve which regis­ tration shall show the name of the owner, the name of the dog, its age, sex and description and the amount collected at the time of registration. (2) Upon registration the Dog Registration Officer shall issue a registration tag free of charge to the owner, which shall be attached to the dog at all times; any change of ownership of any registered dog shall be entered in the register.

Any dog found by the Council of the Band to be a nuisance shall be reported to the Dog Registration Officer who may, upon proper notification, enter upon the premises where the dog may be and may destroy such dog. 6. No unregistered dog shall be harboured or kept by any person and any dog not registered may be seized and destroyed by the Dog Registration Officer. 7. Any person harbouring or keeping a dog that is not registered shall be liable on summary conviction to a penalty not exceeding twenty dollars ($20.00). Approved and passed at'a duly convened meeting of the Council of the Iroquois of St. Regis Band of Indians this 9th day of July, 1 979. The quorum for this Band consists of six Council members. I, Angus Bonaparte Jr., Chief of the Iroquois of St. Regis Band of Indians, do' hereby certify that a true copy of the foregoing by-law was forwarded to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development pursuant to Sec. 82, Sub-sec.
